The most amazing aspect of this book is the time that it was written, on the eve of the United States entering World War II. General Smedley Butler had a long, decorated military career by the time he wrote this. He reached the realization that the blood, lives and money lost by average "patriotic" citizens in war brought big profits to others. His message is clear and concise, but frighteningly rings true today. I highly recommend this book.

I first learned of Gen. Smedley Butler while a new lieutenant in the Marine Corps. With two Medals of Honor, his bravery must remain unquestioned. He explains in this work how he came to see that wars are started by the rich and powerful to enable them to use the sons of the lower classes to go out and steal the wealth and resources of other countries.

I looked at history, and by golly, he is right. Rome, Britain, Belgium (in the Congo), America's "Manifest Destiny over native Americans, annexing Hawaii and the Phillipines, and our post WW II efforts.

And now we have Iraq. Butler indirectly says we only need to follow the money!
