Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1965. Quarto, 22.5 x 28.5 cm, 265pp. 1st edition. Original gray cloth over boards, spine stamped in gilt; no dust jacket; contains five fold-out maps and numerous black-and-white illustration plates. Boards rubbed and lightly soiled; sunned on spine and along top edges; corners bumped. Edges of the text block lightly toned and soiled, with some scattered spot stains to the top edge. Front hinge cracked between xii-xiii, and reinforced with tape between the frontispiece and title page; gutter visible following p. 174; rear hinge cracked with some tape repair just preceding p. 265.
