Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

Fup is a classic tale of kinship, love, magic and death, a remarkable story. Set in the coastal hills of northern California between 1880 and the present, the story centers on three characters: two humans and a duck. Granddaddy Jake Santee, 99 years old and convinced of his immortality, is a cranky reprobate. He religiously practices his belief that drinking Ol' Death Whisper — a 97% whiskey elixir he distills himself from a secret recipe — will keep him alive forever.

Tiny, orphaned at the age of four, is adopted by Granddaddy Jake. He grows into a giant young man, as gentle as Jake is belligerent. Tiny's passion is building masterfully-crafted fences around the ranch, and his nemesis is a huge old boar named Lockjaw that delights in destroying Tiny's work.

Fup is a hen mallard duckling that Tiny mysteriously discovers. She is adopted and becomes part of the Santee family. Possessed of an inordinate appetite and unruly willfullness, Fup grows up to 20 pounds, using her bulk and uncompromising purpose to enforce her sense of order on the household.

These three come together in a story that is hilarious, compelling, and haunting. Author Jim Dodge is a truly original storyteller who has been compared to Mark Twain. With Fup he has created a classic that is exhilarating to discover for the first time, and a pleasure to return to time and again.
