Night Watch: A Discworld Novel (Discworld Novels)

by Terry Pratchett

Night Watch: A Discworld Novel (Discworld Novels) Cover

Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

One moment, Sir Sam Vimes is in his old patrolman form, chasing a sweet-talking psychopath across the rooftops of Ankh-Morpork. The next, he's lying naked in the street, having been sent back thirty years courtesy of a group of time-manipulating monks who won't leave well enough alone. This Discworld is a darker place that Vimes remembers too well, three decades before his title, fortune, beloved wife, and impending first child. Worse still, the murderer he's pursuing has been transported back also. Worst of all, it's the eve of a fabled street rebellion that needlessly destroyed more than a few good (and not so good) men. Sam Vimes knows his duty, and by changing history he might just save some worthwhile necks — though it could cost him his own personal future. Plus there's a chance to steer a novice watchman straight and teach him a valuable thing or three about policing, an impressionable young copper named Sam Vimes.

Review:

"Pratchett's storytelling...is in top form....One comes away, as always, with the feeling that if Ankh-Morpork isn't a real place, it bloody well ought to be." Publishers Weekly

Review:

"Not a side-splitter this time, though broadly amusing and bubbling with wit and wisdom: both an excellent story and a tribute to beat cops everywhere, doing their hair-raising jobs with quiet courage and determination." Kirkus Reviews

Review:

"I did mention that Pratchett is a genius. Let me add that, given the great number of sweet and bitter ironies contained in this story, plus the complexity of the comic plot built to accommodate them, Night Watch is his best work." Philadelphia Inquirer

Review:

"Discworld remains a place of punning, entertaining footnotes, and farce....Pratchett has really developed the characters of the Watch...since their early days in Guards! Guards!, and it shows!" Booklist

Review:

"The stakes are high, yet Pratchett injects humor into the mix. This gripping novel is essential for fans of the series, and is also recommended for those who haven't had the pleasure of traveling there yet." School Library Journal

Review:

"Terry Pratchett may still be pegged a comic novelist, but as Night Watch shows, he's a lot more. In his range of invented characters, his adroit storytelling and his clear-eyed acceptance of humankind's foibles, he reminds me of no one in English literature so much as Geoffrey Chaucer." Washington Post Book World

Review:

"Night Watch delves deeper into the philosophy of war and leadership than most of the Discworld books. It also offers more action than any others in the collection." BookReporter.com

This book hits on so many different themes - duty to society, family, friends. It is my favorite by Terry Pratchett and gives an inkling as to why Veterans take anniversaries so seriously - they did the job they didn't have to do.
