Publisher Comments:

Sarah Byrnes and Eric have been friends for years. When they were children, his fat and her terrible scars made them both outcasts. Later, although swimming slimmed Eric, she stayed his closest friend.

Now Sarah Byrnes — the smartest, toughest person Eric has ever known — sits silent in a hospital. Eric must uncover the terrible secret she's hiding, before its dark currents pull them both under.

Burn victim Sarah Byrnes and high school fat kid Eric Calhoune have been the closest of friends since the sixth grade. As they’ve grown older and moved up in high school, Eric went out for the swim team, lost some of his weight, and made some new friends while Sarah Byrnes has stayed the ugly, weird girl who has burns all over her face. In the process, Eric tries to eat a ton to stay fat for Sarah so she won’t think he’s going to leave her behind. But when Sarah goes mute she’s placed in Sacred Heart hospital to undergo the proper treatment, Eric relives there past to find out anything that may have caused this to happen to her. After visiting her every day, he begins to believe that she is in the hospital for a reason other than her truly being sick. In the mix of all this, Eric still has to worry about swimming and his own personal issues pertaining to his swim teammate, Mark Brittain. Mark has always had the prettiest girl, Jody Mueller, and has had the reputation as the perfect high school, Christian student. Eric’s CAT class begins to talk about very serious topics that unfold secrets about Mark and also begins to make Eric think about what’s really going on inside the head of Sarah Byrnes. Horrific and tragic secrets unravel themselves that don’t only put Eric at risk, but everybody he cares about also. Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes is a moving story about the real feelings going on inside teenagers. It has love, violence, lying, betrayal, and suspense throughout the whole story to keep you wanting more and more after each word. When you finally complete the novel, you will be panting and having an incredible urge to find another story written by Chris Crutcher. I would recommend this book for any reader who thinks they can handle the maturity of real life situations and real life issues.

Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes is about when Eric and Sarah Byrnes became friends there were outcasts in school and how they helped each other through school. Sarah was burned, on her hands and face when, she was little and Eric was the fattest kid in school. Together they survived the bullies in their school. When Eric joins the swim team they start to drift away from each other. Sarah is put into a hospital Eric goes to see her and discovers a dangerous secrete about her past. Eric decides to help her and some dangerous, funny and things happen as he discovers what the secret is. Eric’s coach, Lemry, also decides to help. As they help solve her problem interesting things happen to them and also some dangerous things.
I enjoyed reading this book. It was a little slow in the beginning, but it got better. One of the strengths of the book was how it relates to real life school situations, like bullying. I thing the authors message in this book was to be responsible for your actions and not bully people. This book also contains some deeper topics. Those topics are dealing with drugs, abuse, and abortions. These deeper topics are important they can teach you some important lesions that you can take from this book and apply to things you do and how you treat other people in everyday life. One thing I will take away from this book is how one of the characters was abused and how others were bullied. I would try to make sure this doesn’t happen to other people especially people I know and care about. I would recommend a parents approval for younger kids to read this book, but for adults and young adults it’s a good book to read.
