About the Author

Howard Zinn is a historian, playwright, and social activist. He was a shipyard worker and Air Force bombardier before he went to college under the GI Bill and received his Ph.D. from Columbia University. He has taught at Spelman College and Boston University, and has been a visiting professor at the University of Paris and the University of Bologna. He has received the Thomas Merton Award, the Eugene V. Debs Award, the Upton Sinclair Award, and the Lannan Literary Award. He lives in Auburndale, Massachusetts.

I have been reading the newest version of Zinn's "The Twentieth Century" and once again have been reminded of what an excellent author and researcher he was. This book keeps one's attention and makes the reader start asking questions. If the purpose of reading Zinn is to look at our century through a different set of eyes then he surpassed his mark! "The Twentieth Century" forces one to reevaluate everything we have been taught. It is an excellent way to get students interested in comparative history - read Zinn and then read an American History textbook, debate, discuss,and analyze and Think, probably for the very first time, where you stand!
