Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

When Polly vanishes after Uncle Andrew's horrid trick, Digory has no choice but to follow her. Touching the magic rings takes the children into a wood where mysterious pools lead to countless other worlds.

Their adventure opens up the doorway to Narnia — a new and magical land where animals learn to speak and where trees are able to walk. But Narnia is under threat from the evil Queen, and Digory and Polly have to find the magical fruit that alone can save it.

This exquisite gift edition brings a fresh look to the Magician's Nephew, the first of the seven Chronicles of Narnia.

Synopsis:

On a daring quest to save a life, two friends are hurled into another world where an evil sorceress seeks to enslave them. The first book in The Chronicles of Narnia is now available in a full-color, unabridged gift edition that includes all of the original Pauline Baynes illustrations. This handsome new edition will make a wonderful family keepsake to read aloud together.

Synopsis:

This is the book that C.S. Lewis intended to be the first in his landmark series, The Chronicles of Narnia. Here we are introduced to Polly and Digory, who are tricked by Digory's uncle, Andrew, into becoming part of an experiment that transports them into the adventure of a lifetime. In this unforgettable story, C. S. Lewis shows us how the adventure began — the glorious birth of the land of Narnia at the hand of its mysterious King. This glorious deluxe edition is the perfect introduction to all the wonders of Narnia and is a keepsake to be truly treasured.

Synopsis:

First published in 1955, The Magician's Nephew was the sixth book C. S. Lewis wrote about Narnia. It was intended as a prequel to the series, chronicling events that took place before The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. Many readers prefer to begin reading The Chronicles of Narnia with The Magician's Nephew.

About the Author

C. S. Lewis was born in Belfast, Ireland, in 1898. As a child, he was fascinated by the fairy tales, myths, and ancient legends recounted to him by his Irish nurse. The image of a faun carrying parcels and an umbrella in a snowy wood came to him when he was sixteen. However, it was not until many years later, as a professor at Cambridge University, that the faun was joined by an evil Queen and a magnificent Lion. Their story became The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, one of the best-loved books of all time, and the first of the seven Chronicles of Narnia. With their remarkable combination of adventure, humor, fantasy, and allegory, The Chronicles of Narnia have become classics of children's literature the world over.

Pauline Baynes's illustrations of the Chronicles span a remarkable career, beginning with The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe in 1949. Almost fifty years later she returned to her original illustrations and added spectacular color, which can be enjoyed in this glorious edition.
