Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

Acclaimed historian and award-winning author Simon Schama offers an essential historical perspective on the crucial 2008 presidential election and its importance for reclaiming America's original ideal.

It's not business as usual. Cultural hostilities more irreconcilable than any since the Civil War have divided America in two. In November 2008, the American people elected a new president, feeling more anxious about the future of the nation than at any time since Watergate. Our omnipotent military, the cornucopia of material comforts available, the security of our borders, and the global economy can no longer be taken for granted.

In The American Future, historian Simon Schama takes a long look at the multiple crises besetting the United States and asks how these problems look in the mirror of time. In four crucial debates—on wars, religion, race and immigration, and the relationship between natural resources and prosperity—Schama looks back to see more clearly into the future. Full of lost insights, The American Future showcases Schama's acclaimed gift for storytelling, ensuring these voices will be heard again.

Review:

Who does Simon Schama think he is? The Columbia University historian seems to have few intellectual limits and to require little sleep. He has written pathbreaking books about Dutch history and culture; the Rothschilds and the creation of Israel; sprawling narratives about the Revolution in France and slavery during the Revolution in America; a thick study of Rembrandt; a postmodern historical novel;... Book News Annotation:

Historian Schama adds another item to that large pile of books that attempt to present a broad view of American history and the American experience to a popular audience. While the writing is beautiful and the historical accounts and anecdotes are extensive, the author spends most of his time outlining dichotomies in U.S. history (war vs. peace, established religion vs. freedom of conscience, native-born vs. immigrants, profligacy vs. conservation) without extracting much meaning from these conflicts. With a confidence that has yet to be verified by history, Schama frames his entire effort--not to mention the course of American history--with the election of Barack Obama, an event that he believes brought U.S. democracy "back from the dead." While an entertaining read, there may be more form than substance here. Annotation ©2010 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
