Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

The town psychiatrist has decided to switch everybody in Pine Cove, California, from their normal antidepressants to placebos, so naturally — well, to be accurate, artificially — business is booming at the local blues bar. Trouble is, those lonely slide-guitar notes have also attracted a colossal sea beast named Steve with, shall we say, a thing for explosive oil tanker trucks. Suddenly, morose Pine Cove turns libidinous and is hit by a mysterious crime wave, and a beleaguered constable has to fight off his own gonzo appetites to find out what's wrong and what, if anything, to do about it.

Moore started out with Practical Demonkeeping, and his notoriety took off with Lamb, and I love both of them, but I think that Lust Lizard is the sleeper of the bunch. This book and Coyote Blue are the ones that I think represent the heart of his first decade or so of work - they are both full of lovable characters and unlikely, funny situations that make you laugh out loud, and are actually, occasionally, and probably accidentally, sort of meaningful. If you have read a few of Moore's books, or even if not, and you are considering this one, go for it; you almost certainly won't be disappointed.
