Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

Vikram Seth's novel is, at its core, a love story: Lata and her mother, Mrs. Rupa Mehra, are both trying to find — through love or through exacting maternal appraisal — a suitable boy for Lata to marry. Set in the early 1950s, in an India newly independent and struggling through a time of crisis, A Suitable Boy takes us into the richly imagined world of four large extended families and spins a compulsively readable tale of their lives and loves. A sweeping panoramic portrait of a complex, multiethnic society in flux, A Suitable Boy remains the story of ordinary people caught up in a web of love and ambition, humor and sadness, prejudice and reconciliation, the most delicate social etiquette and the most appalling violence.

About the Author

Vikram Seth who has translated poets, is the author of two bestselling novels, A Suitable Boy--a veritable tour de force in fiction--and a novel in verse, The Golden Gate.He spent several years living in China and published a travel book, From Heaven Lake:Travels Through Sinkiang and Tibet.

It took me a while to pick up this book and actually begin reading it. It is a heavy weight as far as novels go. I hate to even call it a novel. It is a classic. I am sorry Vickrum did not write more novels. A Suitable Boy takes you on an enchanted, sometimes funny sometimes angst filled journey through the lives of four families in the early to mid 1950's and that is an understatement. I suspect VIckram's experience in writing prose is what makes his writing so riveting. I loved every word. When the story ended I was sad. Not by the ending, as it was as lovely as the rest of the book, but because I knew I would miss my evening "dates" with it. I so looked forward to them. This is a classic......a real literary piece de resistance.

Even though the book looks daunting at almost 1500 pages, I whizzed through it and literally couldn't put it down - it is the kind of familial saga (actually four interconnected families) that is rarely attempted these days. Beginning in the years just prior to India's Independence and following to the years immediately after, it covers a huge amount of both historical and emotional territory, without ever getting dry or didactic. I am eagerly awaiting Seth's sequel, which is slated for 2013.

The jacket of my copy of this book quotes a London Times review that says "Make time for it. It will keep you company for the rest of your life." Nothing could be more true about this book. It is beautifully written and engaging, and the characters are so human that you are guaranteed to fall in love with half of them.
