Publisher Comments:

A celebration of the character and style of one of the world's most spectacular cities! This vibrant insider's view of the most mature city on earth is the perfect companion for anyone who loves anything Italian. In 1995, after a twenty-year love affair with Italy, Alan Epstein fulfilled his dream to live in Rome. In As the Romans Do, he celebrates the spirit of this stylish, dramatic, ancient city that formed the hub of a far-flung empire and introduced the Mediterranean culture to the rest of the world. He also reveals today's Roman men and women in all their appealing contradictions: their gregarious caffe culture; inborn artistic flair; passionate appreciation of good food; instinctive mistrust of technology; showy sex appeal; ingrained charm and expressiveness; surprisingly unusual attitudes toward marriage and religion; and much, much more.

Synopsis:

Rome is a great place to visit — but imagine the delights of living there. Long in love with the Eternal City, Alan Epstein has been reveling in life as a resident since 1995. In "As the Romans Do, he reveals the city and its people in all their facets and contradictions: their gregarious "cafféculture, inborn artistic flair, passionate appreciation of good food, instinctive mistrust of technology, showy sex appeal, ingrained charm, and much more. He unveils a place alive with pleasure and paradox, both pagan and Christian, Western and Middle Eastern. Rome is where one can relax, reflect, revel, and rebel — all between the morning's cappucino and the evening's grappa.

Alan Epstein is passionate about Rome, and he shares that passion with his readers. Together with his wife and two sons he moves from California to Rome, and his day-to-day experiences are reflected in this delightful book. Come along with him on his Sunday morning jog, to a function at his sons' school, join them at dinner with friends. Each chapter is a story in itself and an absolute delight to read. Pick up this book and you are, truly, living in Rome and doing as the Romans do.

Ever dreamt of packing up and moving your family to a new country and a new life? Epstein and his wife do just that when they move their young family to Rome. The chapters function as short stories or observations on the experience of being an American living in Italy. The anecdotes range from charming to infuriating. The book is a sweet look at the challenges and payoffs of living as Romans do.
