Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

He found the body on the forty-third day of his walk . . .

Devastated by the senseless murder of his wife, Detective Superintendent Thomas Lynley retreated to Cornwall, where he has spent six solitary weeks hiking the bleak and rugged coastline. But no matter how far he walks, the painful memories do not diminish.

Then, at the base of a cliff near a town better known for its surfing than its intrigue, Lynley discovers the body of a young man who has fallen to his death. First a witness, then a suspect when the hand of a killer is revealed, Lynley remains, above all, a policeman willing to aid the gruff head of an understaffed local constabulary in her investigation. But the secrets in this community run dark and deep--and Lynley must somehow find a way to let go of the past long enough to solve a most devious and dreadful crime.

Synopsis:

After his wife is murdered, Inspector Thomas Lynley retreats to Cornwall, where he hikes the rugged coastline, trying to walk through his grief. After he discovers the body of a young man who has fallen to his death, Lynley is soon caught in the middle of a seemingly perfect crime.

After reading the reviews of “Careless in Red”, I would like to say how much I enjoyed this book. Yes, it is a departure from George’s usual focus; as was her previous novel, “What Came Before He Shot Her”. I believe she is making the point that life does not occur in a vacuum: every person’s history is touched by extraneous characters with troubles of their own. Although I was disappointed by the brief interactions between Lynley and Havers, I knew it was fitting – just as in real life, healing takes time. To open the book with Lynley disheveled, dirty, and grubby made me feel his grief more than anything else could... it was realistic to me, and an homage to Helen that he couldn’t go on as usual.

I think many of us have become so used to the one hour format of the Inspector Lynley Mystery series on PBS, that we have come to expect that rather facile wrap up of a story. They don’t have time to develop characters; thankfully, Elizabeth George does, and does it rather well.
