Jesus, Interrupted: Revealing the Hidden Contradictions in the Bible (and Why We Don't Know about Them)

Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

Picking up where Bible expert Bart Ehrman's New York Times bestseller Misquoting Jesus left off, Jesus, Interrupted addresses the larger issue of what the New Testament actually teaches—and it's not what most people think. Here Ehrman reveals what scholars have unearthed:

  • The authors of the New Testament have diverging views about who Jesus was and how salvation works
  • The New Testament contains books that were forged in the names of the apostles by Christian writers who lived decades later
  • Jesus, Paul, Matthew, and John all represented fundamentally different religions
  • Established Christian doctrines—such as the suffering messiah, the divinity of Jesus, and the trinity—were the inventions of still later theologians

These are not idiosyncratic perspectives of just one modern scholar. As Ehrman skillfully demonstrates, they have been the standard and widespread views of critical scholars across a full spectrum of denominations and traditions. Why is it most people have never heard such things? This is the book that pastors, educators, and anyone interested in the Bible have been waiting for—a clear and compelling account of the central challenges we face when attempting to reconstruct the life and message of Jesus.

Synopsis:

The "New York Times"-bestselling author of "Misquoting Jesus" reveals how books in the Bible were actually forged by later authors and that the New Testament itself is riddled with contradictory claims about Jesus--information that scholars know but the general public does not.

I was raised in a very strict Catholic home. As a young adult I stopped practicing my religion out of frustration and feeling deceived because I always felt like I was never really getting the whole story about Jesus and the Bible. As an older adult I rejoined the Catholic faith and actually went through a two year formation process and became a lay minister in the Catholic Church. I learned a lot through my intense two years of formation classes, but still nothing compared to what Ehrman taught me in his book: Jesus Interrupted. I was relieved to read Ehrman's book and have the facts placed in front of me. He gave me no reason to doubt the history of Jesus and introduced a fresh way to read the Bible. Yes, I believe Jesus existed and died by crucifixtion. I believe in our lives we travel through peaks and valleys with our [blind] faith and Ehrman's books are there for the entire trip as a guide. He has answered questions I have had but afraid to ask. In a sense he has restored my belief in myself and allowed me not to be afraid of the answers. With church attendance down I think we need to ask the true "Why?" and read Ehrman. People want the up front answer and the preachers in the churches need to stop being afraid to give the correct answer to the people. We are seekers and will find the answers, so better for the preachers to teach the truth than to hide the information. Etneral life and God is in the soul or thoughts of the believer and not necessarily in the history of Jesus! So do not fear reading Ehrman.
