About the Author

Gail Carson Levine is the author of the Newbery Honor Book Ella Enchanted; New York Times bestsellers Ever and Fairest; ALA Notable Book Dave At Night; The Wish; The Two Princesses of Bamarre; the six Princess Tales books; the nonfiction book Writing Magic: Creating Stories That Fly; and a companion to this picture book, Betsy Who Cried Wolf!

She lives with her husband, David, and their Airedale, Baxter, in the Hudson Valley of New York State, in a farmhouse that was built more than two hundred years ago.

Kezi is a beautiful mortal, an exceptional dancer and weaver. Olus is the god of winds, lonely and young. When Kezi's mother falls ill, her father swears to sacrifice the first person to congratulate him on his wife's recovery if she is cured. To prevent anyone she loves being killed Kezi makes sure she is the first to congratulate her father. Olus, who has fallen in love with the young mortal, tells her that if she can become a god she will survive the sacrifice. Together they set out to find a way that Kezi will be able to live.

This was a quick and interesting read. The writing was mostly very good but had a few rough spots and confusing moments that I felt the editor should have had Levine fix.

Mortal Kezi, young dancer, rug-weaver extraordinaire, and daughter of a wealthy Hyte family, has caught the eye of Olus, Akkan god of the winds. Despite being a god, or perhaps because of it, Olus despairs of winning the affection of Kezi. That is, until Kezi inadvertently commits herself to becoming a human sacrifice to the god Admet... A magical mix of fairy-tale, mythology, faith and romance, with appealing strong female characters and imperfect but compassionate gods and goddesses.
