Once again, Colin Thubron gives us a superb travel narrative, full of his deep experience and insight. As one of the living masters of travel writing, Thubron describes the historical background to this fabled route while giving his first hand perspective on life along the route today. Traveling in dangerous and war-torn lands, Thubron also tells us what has been lost through war and time. This is a compelling read--real life background to headlines we see everyday. Highly recommended.
