Bad Monkeys (P.S.)

by Matt Ruff

Bad Monkeys (P.S.) Cover

Staff Pick

Bad Monkeys twists, turns, shifts, and shakes its way through the story of Jane Charlotte, a woman who claims to be a member of a clandestine organization dedicated to fighting evil known as the Final Disposition of Irredeemable Persons. A gripping, witty, and hilariously bizarre story about lies, betrayal, and a secret world.
Recommended by David, Powells.com

"Ruff throws the reader some astounding curveballs, often necessitating the need to re-read and re-re-read some passages to make tentative sense of what's going on. In this way, Bad Monkeys pleasingly resembles cinematic brain corkscrews such as Memento and The Usual Suspects."

Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

Jane Charlotte has been arrested for murder.

She says she's a member of a secret organization devoted to fighting evil. She says she's working with the Department for the Final Disposition of Irredeemable Persons — aka "Bad Monkeys."

Her confession lands her in the jail's psychiatric wing and earns her countless hours of poking, probing, and questioning by a professional. But is Jane crazy or lying?

Or is she playing a whole different game altogether?

Synopsis:

Jane Charlotte claims to be a member of a secret organization--the Bad Monkeys--devoted to ridding the world of especially evil people. As Jane's tale grows increasingly bizarre, a psychiatrist tries to sort truth from lies. Is she lying or crazy, or is her tale unbelievably true?

This book is a good light read. It's a mystery conspiracy with a touch of sci-fi and plenty of plot twists to keep the reader involved. Is Jane Charlotte really part of a mysterious crime fighting group or is she just delusional? And who are these bad monkeys? It's a fun trip to find out the answers. Just when you think you understand, things change.

Not a classic in the making, but a fun, quick read with a satisfying storyline and conclusion. Using science fiction conventions, Ruff tells a farcical story of intrigue and double-dealing, X-Files and Illuminati-style shadow organizations, and deeply pleasing paranoia. A good bathtub book, and a good gift for your conspiracy-minded friends.
