Publisher Comments:

Sent to a boarding school in Ancelstierre as a young child, Sabriel has had little experience with the random power of Free Magic or the Dead who refuse to stay dead in the Old Kingdom. But during her final semester, her father, the Abhorsen, goes missing, and Sabriel knows she must enter the Old Kingdom to find him. She soon finds companions in Mogget, a cat whose aloof manner barely conceals its malevolent spirit, and Touchstone, a young Charter Mage long imprisoned by magic, now free in body but still trapped by painful memories. As the three travel deep into the Old Kingdom, threats mount on all sides. And every step brings them closer to a battle that will pit them against the true forces of life and death—and bring Sabriel face-to-face with her own destiny.

With Sabriel, the first installment in the Abhorsen trilogy, Garth Nix exploded onto the fantasy scene as a rising star, in a novel that takes readers to a world where the line between the living and the dead isn't always clear—and sometimes disappears altogether.

Synopsis:

Synopsis:

Game of Thrones fans will love the New York Times bestselling Abhorsen series. Sabriel, the first installment in the trilogy, launched critically acclaimed author Garth Nix onto the fantasy scene as a rising star.

Since childhood, Sabriel has lived outside the walls of the Old Kingdom, away from the power of Free Magic, and away from the Dead who refuse to stay dead. But now her father, the Abhorson, is missing, and Sabriel must cross into that world to find him. With Mogget, whose feline form hides a powerful, perhaps malevolent spirit, and Touchstone, a young Charter Mage, Sabriel travels deep into the Old Kingdom. There she confronts an evil that threatens much more than her life and comes face-to-face with her own hidden destiny. . . .

There isn't any one thing about this book that I can point to and say "This is what makes it good." The plot is excellent, and I find that the characters are very well done; this is a book that strikes a good balance between being plot-driven and being character-driven. The world and magic system are original, and are appropriately fantastical while also seeming very real. I loved the overall atmosphere of this book, and found pretty much everything about it to be engaging.

The only not-glowing opinion I have of 'Sabriel' is about the romantic subplot; it built up gradually and naturally throughout most of the book and then resolved itself rather abruptly in the end. Didn't detract from the book too much, but just ... seemed out of place.

I'd recommend 'Sabriel' to anyone who likes fantasy, anyone who hasn't read much fantasy but thinks they might like to, and maybe even people who don't like fantasy but would be willing to give it another go.

Written for the young adult readers but, I think most adult fantasy readers would enjoy this book. Its the first in a trilogy. The magic system in this book is original and creative and really adds to the story. All around, a VERY fresh, creative and enjoyable read. You'll want to read all three for sure!
