After 10 years and 13 adventures, The Witch with No Name (Voyager) is the triumphant conclusion to Kim Harrison's Hollows series. Rachel Morgan has come a long way from her early days as an inexperienced bounty hunter. To save her best friend Ivy's soul and the rest of the living vampires, and to keep the demonic ever-after and our own world from utter destruction at the hands of fanatics, she must risk everything. In The Getaway God (Voyager), the sixth high-octane adventure of Richard Kadrey's bestselling Sandman Slim series, James Stark must save himself — and the entire world — from the wrath of some enraged and vengeful ancient gods.

Publisher Comments:

Life's a bitch, then you die . . . if you're lucky

James Stark, a.k.a. Sandman Slim, crawled out of Hell, took bloody revenge for his girlfriend's murder, and saved the world along the way. After that, what do you do for an encore?

You take a lousy job tracking down monsters for money. It's a depressing gig, but it pays for your beer and cigarettes. In L.A., though, things can always get worse.

Like when Lucifer comes to town to supervise his movie biography and drafts Stark as his bodyguard. Sandman Slim has to swim with the human and inhuman sharks of L.A.'s underground power elite. That's before the murders start. And before he runs into the Czech porn star who isn't quite what she seems. Even before all those murdered people start coming back from the dead and join a zombie army that will change our world and Stark's forever.

Death bites. Life is worse. All things considered, Hell's not looking so bad.

Synopsis:

“Sandman Slim is my kind of hero.”
—Kim Harrison

“Richard Kadrey is a genius.”
—Holly Black

Sandman Slim is back from Hell. After wreaking unholy havoc in author Richard Kadreys resoundingly acclaimed Sandman Slim, the demon-slaying anti-hero and half-angel fugitive from the underworld returns in a brutally funny, eye-poppingly inventive, and totally addicting follow-up, Kill the Dead. If youre a fan of Buffy and Jim Butcher, Christopher Moore, Neil Gaiman, and Warren Ellis, or you dig the dark urban fantasy vibe of Charlaine Harris, Kim Harrison, and Simon Green, youll cheer Lucifers onetime personal assassin as he signs on as his ex-boss Hollywood bodyguard…and takes on the zombie apocalypse almost single-handedly.

Jeffrey Bluhm, December 1, 2013 (view all comments by Jeffrey Bluhm)
A supernatural take on the hard-boiled detective novel. Sandman Slim is a classic anti-hero, with the cynical lifeview of a pulp fiction PI, but there is a strong current of humor in both the continuous metaphors and the rapid-fire dialogue. With a severed head as his main foil, and a supporting cast that includes vampires, zombies, Lucifer, and some of Kadrey's unique creations, the story has a contemporary setting but a rich element of the inhuman. The intricate plot is best understood if you start with the first novel in the series, "Sandman Slim", as this is less a stand-alone sequel than a continuation of the overarching plot introduced in the first novel. And don't ignore the fun of watching people's eyes as you sit in your favorite coffee shop reading a book with "Kill the Dead" on the cover!
