Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

Lauren Oliver's powerful New York Times bestselling novel Delirium—the first in a dystopian trilogy—presents a world as terrifying as George Orwell's 1984 and a romance as true as Romeo & Juliet.

In an alternate United States, love has been declared a dangerous disease, and the government forces everyone who reaches eighteen to have a procedure called the Cure. Living with her aunt, uncle, and cousins in Portland, Maine, Lena Haloway is very much looking forward to being cured and living a safe, predictable life. She watched love destroy her mother and isn't about to make the same mistakes.

But with ninety-five days left until her treatment, Lena meets enigmatic Alex, a boy from the Wilds who lives under the government's radar. What will happen if they do the unthinkable and fall in love?

Delirium received starred reviews from Kirkus and School Library Journal, and was named a Best Book of the Year by USA Today, Kirkus, Amazon.com, YALSA, and the Chicago Public Library and was selected as one of NPR's Top 100 Best Ever Teen Novels.

Synopsis:

They say that the cure for Love will make me happy and safe forever. And Ive always believed them. Until now. Now everything has changed. Now, Id rather be infected with love for the tiniest sliver of a second than live a hundred years smothered by a lie.

Synopsis:

Ninety-five days, and then I'll be safe. I wonder whether the procedure will hurt. I want to get it over with. It's hard to be patient. It's hard not to be afraid while I'm still uncured, though so far the deliria hasn't touched me yet. Still, I worry. They say that in the old days, love drove people to madness. The deadliest of all deadly things: It kills you both when you have it and when you don't.

Lauren Oliver astonished readers with her stunning debut, Before I Fall. In a starred review, Publishers Weekly called it "raw, emotional, and, at times, beautiful. An end as brave as it is heartbreaking." Her much-awaited second novel fulfills her promise as an exceptionally talented and versatile writer.

I thought this book was a very interesting book. What if we lived in a world without love? Where we never had to fall in love or feel lovesick? It was a very good book and kept my attention the entire time. Definitely a good book.

Delirium is a book about a 17 year old girl named Lena who is oblivious to what the world is like outside of portland. All her life she has been thinking her mother committed suicide because of the disease, Amor Deliria Nervosa. She also thinks the procedure is good and has been counting down the days till hers. All she thinks is that the rest of the world is destroyed from the disease. But that all slightly shifts when she is being tested for being paired she sees a strange boy smiling at her from above. Slowly she begins to fall for him as introduced himself as Alex and continuously does flirty things. Eventually her best friend hana finds out and is in on the plan. Lena is matched, the summer is almost over and she is miserable. As she is opening up and telling Alex about her mom he realizes that her mother is possibly still alive…

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys romance or dystopian novels. I LOVE this book because I think it has a really good hidden message and it’s really well written. I also like it because it’s really age appropriate for ages ranging from 11 to 16. Its not super hard to read and it has sequels to continue the story for people who like sequels.
