Enter the woods... if you dare

Into the Woods

For centuries, the woods have been a pivotal part of the wonder and danger of fairy tales, for once you enter anything can happen. Elves, druids, fairies — who knows what you will find once you dare step into the forest?

And now, New York Times bestselling author Kim Harrison ventures into these mysterious, hidden lands of magic and mystery in her first short-story collection. Into the Woods brings together an enchanting mix of brand-new, never-before-published stories and tales from Harrison's beloved, bestselling Hollows series.

The tales here include an original Hollows novella, Million-Dollar Baby, about Trent Kalamack's secret elven quest in Pale Demon; two original short stories, "Pet Shop Boys" and "Temson Woods," that explore just what happens when humanity and the supernatural collide; and two novelettes, "Spider Silk" and "Grace," set in new worlds of imagination and adventure. Into the Woods also contains all of the previously published Hollows short stories — together in one volume for the very first time.

Step into the woods and discover the magic for yourself.

Review:

"Harrison's Hollows series remains one of the more solid and satisfying islands in the current sea of novels involving vampires, demons, and werewolves. Hollows fans will be enthralled by the first half of this short story collection, which offers glimpses of history and new insights into many familiar characters, including demon Algaliarept, vampire Ivy Tamwood, and Jenks the pixie; first-time readers will find the stories an accessible and intriguing introduction to the series. The second half of the book goes outside of the Hollows to introduce other fantasy creatures with Harrison's unique spin, such as the dryads who Will Temson inadvertently inherits in 'Temson Estates' and the angry tree spirit with whom grandmother Emily, mother Meg, and child Lilly must come to terms in 'Spider Silk.' Harrison's talent for making supernaturals understandable, likable, and engaging is amply demonstrated in this strong collection. Agent: Richard Curtis, Richard Curtis Associates. (Oct.)" "I wouldn't miss a Kim Harrison book for anything." Charlaine Harris

Review:

"For the first time, all of Kim Harrison's shorter pieces are gathered together in one volume....A must read for Harrison fans." Booklist

Review:

"Whether exploring the backstory of Mia the banshee ('Dirty Magic') or trying out a different sort of supernatural creature (e.g., the dryad in 'Temson Estates'), this collection should attract Harrison's sizable fan base." Library Journal

Synopsis:

A true queen of urban fantasy — the New York Times bestselling author of the wildly popular series featuring bounty hunter witch-turned-daywalking demon Rachel Morgan — the phenomenal Kim Harrison explores the Hollows more deeply than ever before in Into the Woods, her first collection of short stories. Rachel is here, as are Jenks the pixie, elven tycoon Trent Kalamack, and an unholy host of vampires, demons, shapeshifters, ghosts, and other assorted supernatural beings, friends and foes. Into the Woods combines original work, including a new Hollows novella, as well as all of Kim Harrison's previously published short fiction gathered together in one volume for the very first time. No true Hollows aficionado will want to pass this up — and readers of Laurell K. Hamilton, Kelley Armstrong, Patricia Briggs, and Jim Butcher; fans of Stephanie Meyer's Twilight novels and of paranormal romance superstars Christine Feehan and Sherrilyn Kenyon, will be likewise enchanted.

I really enjoyed this anthology of short stories by Kim Harrison about her Hollows series. I have read the entire series and loved it so much that I had to get Into the Woods despite already having read one of the short stories already. The author also gives us all her thoughts on the stories such as how they came about. My favorite definitely has to be the one about Ivy (Undead in the Garden of Good and Evil) as it really gave a deeper insight into why Ivy acts the way she does in regards to blood/sex/love. But the story about Trent's quest with Jenks (Million Dollar Baby) has been a story I had been dying to read ever since finishing Pale Demon. Jenks' solo mission with Bis in Ley Line Drifter was also really cool. Also included at the end of this book are 4 shorts that happen outside of the Hollows world. While I will be sad to see the Hollows end in the near future; hopefully one of these "worlds" will be next for exploration as a series.
