Soccer is much more than a game, or even a way of life. It's a perfect window into the crosscurrents of today's world, with all its joys and sorrows. In this remarkably insightful, wide-ranging work of reportage, Franklin Foer takes us on a surprising tour through the world of soccer, shining a spotlight on the clash of civilizations, the international economy, and just about everything in between. How Soccer Explains the World is an utterly original book that makes sense of our troubled times.

Synopsis:

This wide-ranging work of reportage is a unique and brilliantly illuminating look at the world's most popular sport as a new metaphor for the pressing issues of our age, from the clash of civilizations to the global economy.

Fun, informative and creative, Foer writes for soccer fans and newbies alike. As someone who isn’t a huge soccer fan (though I’ll watch if it’s on TV), I recommended this book to a soccer fan, who loved it (and sparked a ton of conversations about all things soccer…oops). Writing with a unique view of the world, Foer does his research, asks the difficult questions, and comes to his own rational conclusions while indulging his soccer obsession. A fascinating read for those looking to bring a little explanation to a chaotic world.
