About the Author

Eleanor Henderson earned her MFA from the University of Virginia in 2005. Her story "The Farms" was selected by Alice Sebold for The Best American Short Stories 2009. Henderson's fiction has also appeared in Agni, North American Review, Ninth Letter, and Columbia, among other publications. Her nonfiction has appeared in Poets & Writers, where she was a contributing editor, and Virginia Quarterly Review, where she was the chair of the fiction board. An assistant professor at Ithaca College, she lives in Ithaca, New York.

A mesmerizing, gritty novel about the wants and pursuits of a small family/group of individuals seeking better. Eleanor Henderson has written a spellbinding page turner that at once makes your stomach turn at thoughts of hurt and more hurt but wants you to want more, better for her characters. It is a creatively crafted story and I highly recommend it to those who enjoy being enmeshed in the lives of those who have everything to lose.

i picked this up by accident, and half expected to leave it half read. but something sunk in almost immediately, and i felt totally invested in the fate of the characters and the cities they lived in, loved, and half longed to leave. they got into my head and heart, and i felt equally compelled by all of them and how real they felt to me as a reader. the music scene and clash of cultures felt a tiny bit over written, but it didn't matter. i loved this book and can't wait for more by eleanor henderson.
