Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

Paperback features over fifty pages of bonus materials, including a sneak peek of Insurgent, an author Q&A, a discussion guide, a Divergent playlist, faction manifestos, and more!

In Beatrice Prior's dystopian Chicago world, society is divided into five factions, each dedicated to the cultivation of a particular virtue — Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). On an appointed day of every year, all sixteen-year-olds must select the faction to which they will devote the rest of their lives. For Beatrice, the decision is between staying with her family and being who she really is — she can't have both. So she makes a choice that surprises everyone, including herself.

During the highly competitive initiation that follows, Beatrice renames herself Tris and struggles alongside her fellow initiates to live out the choice they have made. Together they must undergo extreme physical tests of endurance and intense psychological simulations, some with devastating consequences. As initiation transforms them all, Tris must determine who her friends really are — and where, exactly, a romance with a sometimes fascinating, sometimes exasperating boy fits into the life she's chosen. But Tris also has a secret, one she's kept hidden from everyone because she's been warned it can mean death. And as she discovers unrest and growing conflict that threaten to unravel her seemingly perfect society, she also learns that her secret might help her save those she loves... or it might destroy her.

Veronica Roth is the New York Times bestselling author of Divergent, the first in a trilogy of dystopian thrillers filled with electrifying decisions, heartbreaking betrayals, stunning consequences, and unexpected romance.

Synopsis:

A dark and tender post-apocalyptic love story set in the aftermath of a bloody war

In a city where humans and Darklings are now separated by a high wall and tensions between the two races still simmer after a terrible war, sixteen-year-olds Ash Fisher, a half-blood Darkling, and Natalie Buchanan, a human and the daughter of the Emissary, meet and do the unthinkable--they fall in love. Bonded by a mysterious connection that causes Ash's long-dormant heart to beat, Ash and Natalie first deny and then struggle to fight their forbidden feelings for each other, knowing if they're caught, they'll be executed--but their feelings are too strong.

When Ash and Natalie then find themselves at the center of a deadly conspiracy that threatens to pull the humans and Darklings back into war, they must make hard choices that could result in both their deaths.

This book and its sequel are both thrilling and adventurous. In between jumping off roof tops and into train carts Tris Prior is learning more about who she is and more importantly who she is when she is face to face with dangerous situations. Of course it isn't all knife throwing and gun shooting! It is also a love story with Tris and Four. An epic love likely to join ranks with Katniss & Petta, Christian & Ana, and Jace & Clary. All in all it is a fantastic book as is Insurgent and hopefully Allegent!

divegent was a fast paced novel which keeps you on the edge of your seat every chapter. this is one of the best books i have ever read. i think this book would be great for people who enjoyed books like the hunger games, which has a similar feel to this.

Divergent is a true nail-biting, edge of your seat dystopian adventure. The suspense starts in the first chapter and continues to build until the very sappy, cliche ending. Teens will not care that the ending is cheesy - they will be too focused on trying to breathe normally again and on finding the sequels. Beatrice, a loyal and compliant citizen, lives in a post apocalyptic city that has re-built itself by placing everyone over the age of 15 in "factions" based on their personality. Faction loyalty comes before family, personal goals or friends. While being tested to identify her faction, Beatrice is told she has an extremely dangerous trait that will mark her as an enemy if anyone finds out. Divergent has some very strong social commentary and moral conflicts mixed in with the suspense which could lead to some great discussions. Divergent is another terrific YA novel that adults will enjoy, too.
