The astonishing true story of Atlantis

In 1500 B.C. a supervolcano beneath the Greek island of Santorini exploded in a near-apocalyptic eruption. Buried beneath the rubble and waves was the worlds most remarkable lost civilization. . . .

New York Times bestselling historian Gavin Menzies presents newly uncovered evidence revealing, conclusively, that “the lost city of Atlantis” was not only real but also at the heart of a highly advanced global empire that reached the shores of America before being violently wiped from the earth.

For three millennia, the legend of Atlantis has gripped the imaginations of explorers, philosophers, occultists, treasure hunters, historians, and archaeologists. Until now, it has remained shrouded in myth. Yet, like ancient Troy, is it possible that this fabled city actually existed? If so, what happened to it and what are its secrets? The fascinating reality of Atlantiss epic glory and destruction are uncovered, finally, in these pages in thrilling detail by the iconoclastic historian Gavin Menzies—father of some of “the most revolutionary ideas in the history of history” (New York Times).

Meticulously analyzing exciting new geologic research, recently unearthed archaeological artifacts, and cutting-edge DNA evidence, Menzies has made a jaw-dropping discovery: Atlantis truly did exist, and was part of the incredibly advanced Minoan civilization that extended from its Mediterranean base to England, India, and even America. In The Lost Empire of Atlantis, he constructs a vivid portrait of this legendary civilization and shares his remarkable findings.

As riveting as an Indiana Jones adventure, The Lost Empire of Atlantis is a revolutionary work of popular history that will forever change our understanding of the past.

Synopsis:

The New York Times bestselling author of Turn Right at Machu Picchu sets out to uncover the truth behind the legendary lost city of Atlantis.

A few years ago, Mark Adams made a strange discovery: Everything we know about the lost city of Atlantis comes from the work of one man, the Greek philosopher Plato. Then he made a second, stranger discovery: Amateur explorers are still actively searching for this sunken city all around the world, based entirely on the clues Plato left behind.

Exposed to the Atlantis obsession, Adams decides to track down these people and determine why they believe itand#8217;s possible to find the worldand#8217;s most famous lost city and whether any of their theories could prove or disprove its existence. He visits scientists who use cutting-edge technology to find legendary civilizations once thought to be fictional. He examines the numerical and musical codes hidden in Platoand#8217;s writings, and with the help of some charismatic sleuths traces their roots back to Pythagoras, the sixth-century BC mathematician. He learns how ancient societies transmitted accounts of cataclysmic eventsand#151;and how one might dig out the and#147;kernel of truthand#8221; in Platoand#8217;s original tale.

Meet Me in Atlantis is Adamsand#8217;s enthralling account of his quest to solve one of historyand#8217;s greatest mysteries; a travelogue that takes readers to fascinating locations to meet irresistible characters; and a deep, often humorous look at the human longing to rediscover a lost world.

What I like most about Mr Menzies is his astonishing intellect - - to have started with a few clues and then followed through on a research quest which ties together EVIDENCE from the most ancient of sources and validated by the most sophisticated modern techniques (I trust that the mention of DNA in this context is not going to be a "spoiler") is simply inspiring. And may I add, delightful!
I recall from many years ago that evidence of coca (yes that's right - - the cocaine type) had been discovered in the pyramids of Egypt. And that "scholars" had simply denied it, because "it couldn't have been."
Mr Menzies allowed no such prejudicial constraint to hamper his vision, and his wide-ranging search led to the discovery of a picture so clear and so eye-opening that it compares to that first moment I saw the National Geographic map that showed us the Atlantic Ocean floor. Certainly the core samples on either side of the rift confirmed the spreading continents, but from that first glimpse, we had no doubt.
As we read his book we watch him sketch the details of an equally compelling picture, and as the lines of evidence color in the empty spaces of history, once again: we are left with no doubt.
What a Joy!
