Publisher Comments:

You think you know John? Well, let's see . . .What bathroom fixture did his father have in mind at his birth? Does algebra have a use, besides torture? Who is Glory Halle-lujah? Who is Violent Hayes? What do they want? Who or what are the Lashasa Palulu? Why do fools fall in love? How can anyone who is fighting a secret battle for his life know anyone? And how can they know him?

Synopsis:

This acclaimed novel for young adults features a teenage boy named John who is by turns darkly funny, achingly self-aware, and very afraid.

At school, John is pretty normal. He has a few friends, a girl he'd love to ask out (but doesn't think he will), struggles with algebra and plays badly in band. What no one knows is that to him, none of this is real. What is real is going home to face the man who is not his father, hoping today is a good day and no one will get beat up. What is real is wondering why his mother doesn't seem to see any of it. What is real is knowing that, really, no one knows anything about him.

I'm not sure what I think of this book. On the one hand John is a witty and likable narrator, the characters felt realistic and the pacing is not bad. But I felt no connection to the story. I really just didn't care about any of the characters or what was going to happen. I repeatedly put the book down for days (unusual for me) and had to force myself to get back to it. Perhaps this is due to John's own feelings of isolation, but it made for a difficult read.

This book just blew me away!! It is written so differently than any other book I've read, and some parts just had me laughing my ass off! But other parts made me want to cry.... It is VERY well written, and there were some parts where I could relate it completely to my own life! LOL Like how Beezer's other nickname was "The Bottomless Pit". That's MY nickname! For the same reason too....

This is my all-time favorite book. I love the way it is written, almost like someone is actually thinking these things. It makes you sick in your stomach to see how real this character is. John, the main character, is just so loveable and creative and you just want to give him a hug throughout the whole book as you read.
