Publisher Comments:

Get on the mound and inside the minds of baseball's best, past and present, for a behind-the-scenes look at how pitchers think.

"Just take the ball and throw it where you want to. Throw strikes. Home plate don't move."

--Satchel Paige

The basics are simple: Throw it high and tight, low and away, and put it over the plate. But the art of pitching is as complex and varied as the men who've mastered it.

In Pitching Secrets of the Pros, those strategies are revealed as longtime baseball writer Wayne Stewart takes you beyond the basics and into the minds of the masters. Through exclusive interviews, humorous anecdotes, and historical research, this unusual how-to book will provide you with keen insight and instruction from the best of the best on the mound.

Whether it's the legendary Cy Young and his impressive control, Greg Maddux and his dazzling repertoire of pitches, or Nolan Ryan with his sizzling fastball, pitching's Ph.D.s have important lessons to share on how they do what they do--and why it works. Roger Clemens, Tom Glavine, Lee Smith, Goose Gossage, and Curt Schilling are only a few of the big-leaguers who offer their insights to aspiring hurlers, teaching you about:

  • Preparation and training
  • Different types of pitches
  • The catcher's influence
  • What happens in the bullpen
  • Individual styles and theories of pitching
  • The art of intimidation
  • And everything else you need to gain a competitive edge on the mound

Synopsis:
