Spanish for Reading and Translation

Spanish for Reading and Translation is designed to prepare students to be able to read in Spanish, particularly for students enrolled in universities that call for a reading knowledge of a foreign language as a requirement for a graduate degree. Requiring only a recognition knowledge of Spanish, this text prepares students to answer content questions about passages and to translate English text into Spanish.

Every chapter includes the following sections:

Preliminary Lesson

• Pronunciation, reading strategies, cognates and use of the dictionary

Chapter 1

• Gender and number of nouns, definite and indefinite articles, and prepositions

Chapter 2

• Adjectives, subject pronouns, present tense, ser and estar

Chapter 3

• Imperfect tense and preterit tense

Chapter 4

• Future tense, conditional tense and affirmative and negative word pairs

• Compound tenses and progressive tenses

Chapter 6

• Commands, present subjunctive, and present subjunctive in noun clauses

Chapter 7

• Present subjunctive in adjective and adverbial clauses, imperfect subjunctive, and sequence of tenses

• Compound tenses of the subjunctive, si clauses, adjective, adverbs, and superlatives

Chapter 9

• Direct and indirect object pronouns, gustar and similar verbs, personal a, neuter pronoun lo, pronouns as objects of prepositions, reflexive pronouns, and reciprocal constructions

• True passive voice, passive construction with se, se in accidental happenings, estar plus past participle, and hace in time expressions

Chapter 11

• Possessive adjectives and pronouns, demonstrative adjectives and pronouns, and relatives

Chapter 12

• Por and para, questions and exclamations, word order, numbers, expressions of obligation, lo plus adjectives and adverbs, uses of the infinitive, and diminutives and augmentatives
