Laurie Lee's writing is evocative, beautiful and poetic without being soppy. He paints a clear picture of a way of life that no longer exists, and the characters and stories from the village of his youth intrigue the reader and warm the heart. I have not picked up such a pleasant book in years, and read more and more slowly as I approached the last page so that it wouldn't end.
