Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

Past the rusted gates
and untrimmed hedges,
Hill House broods and waits...

Four seekers have come to the ugly, abandoned old mansion: Dr. Montague, an occult scholar looking for solid evidence of the psychic phenomenon called haunting; Theodora, his lovely and lighthearted assistant; Eleanor, a lonely, homeless girl well acquainted with poltergeists; and Luke, the adventurous future heir of Hill House. At first, their stay seems destined to be merely a spooky encounter with inexplicable noises and self-closing doors, but Hill House is gathering its powers and will soon choose one of them to make its own...

Review:

"Makes your blood chill and your scalp prickle....Shirley Jackson is the master of the haunted tale." New York Times Book Review

Review:

"Shirley Jackson is unparalleled as a leader in the field of beautifully written, quiet, cumulative shudders." Dorothy Parker, Esquire

Synopsis:

The four visitors at Hill House — some there for knowledge, others for adventure — are unaware that the old mansion will soon choose one of them to make its own.

I don't know if this is good or bad, but ever since I've put this book down, I've had nightmares....really spooky book about a haunted house. Jackson has an uncanny ability to convey the horror of the diseased house, but without any of the phony visuals. Everything here is a psychological haunting which really sticks with you for days. Probably the best "haunting" I've ever read. Enjoy it if you can!!

Shirley Jackson finds a way to make this book incredibly creepy in a sneaky way. I tried my best not to read it in the dark, but I had bad dreams anyway. Her use of imagery and language create a thrilling, bone-chilling book.
