Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

Set in an exotic Eastern landscape peopled by magicians and fantastic talking animals, Salman Rushdie's classic children's novel Haroun and the Sea of Stories inhabits the same imaginative space as Gulliver's Travels, Alice in Wonderland, and The Wizard of Oz. In this captivating adaptation for the stage, Haroun sets out on an adventure to restore the poisoned source of the sea of stories. On the way, he encounters many foes, all intent on draining the sea of all its storytelling powers.

Review:

"As eloquent a defense of art as any Renaissance treatise...saturated with the hyperreal color of such classic fantasies as The Wizard of Oz and Alice in Wonderland." Publishers Weekly

Synopsis:

The author of The Satanic Verses returns with his most humorous and accessible novel yet. This is the story of Haroun, a 12-year-old boy whose father Rashid is the greatest storyteller in a city so sad that it has forgotten its name. When the gift of gab suddenly deserts Rashid, Haroun sets out on an adventure to rescue his print.

I read this in my sophmore year of High School and read it again this year, and last, and I can honestly say it was a great book. It was a creative story and I would definitely recommend it to any and all readers. If young adults like to read books that deal with anything that is abnormal, like flying mechanical birds or genies, they will definietly like this book.

Katie Boehnlein, January 3, 2012 (view all comments by Katie Boehnlein)
A beautifully, imaginative book filled with wonder, mystery, silliness, and a Seussical mystical quality as well! I loved the tone of the book, it reminded me of magical realism the likes of Marquez and Allende. Though this book has a child-like quality to it, it also includes profound commentary on storytelling, modernization, pollution, and family weaved in and dispersed throughout. I also loved Rushdie's descriptive writing, he took me on a carpet ride to another world.

Rushdie wrote this book after he had been sentenced to death by Islamic fundamantalists living all around the world. It was actually, according to the writer's own view, a kind of rediverting his attention towards the work of fiction after being frustrated a lot. The book is a kind of sequel to the emminent work of literature, The Arabian Nights. As like his other works of fiction it has been written in a fantastic manner.
