Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

When the unconventional Durrell family can no longer endure the damp, gray English climate, they do what any sensible family would do: sell their house and relocate to the sunny Greek isle of Corfu. My Family and Other Animals was intended to embrace the natural history of the island but ended up as a delightful account of Durrell's family's experiences, from the many eccentric hangers-on to the ceaseless procession of puppies, toads, scorpions, geckoes, ladybugs, glowworms, octopuses, bats, and butterflies into their home.

Synopsis:

Soaked in the sunshine of Corfu, where Gerald Durrell lived as a boy with his "family and other animals, " this book evocatively chronicles his five-year sojourn on the Greek island. With hilarious yet endearing portraits of his eccentric family and their many unusual hangers-on, My Family and Other Animals also captures the beginnings of Durrell's lifelong love of animals. In its passionate understanding of Corfu's natural history, this is an entertaining and enduring memoir.

Several years ago Masterpiece Theater portrayed this book on television. It was hilarious, one of more memorable PSB series I have seen.

Years ago when I lived in Alaska, Carla at Powells recommended this book. My husband read it first, laughing through the pages, then my son (age 11) read it, laughing too, then I read it, laughing as well. Through the years, we've all re-read the book many times and it is a favorite. It's about a family living in England who temporarily move to Corfu and the story is about Gerald as a young boy and his love of the natural world as well as the involvement of each of his very interesting family members. The story is told so vividly that you think you are there on the island and the antics that occur within this family make you laugh till you cry. We have recommended this book to many people through the years. It is a must read.

In 2008 by husband suffered a massive brain hemorrhage (he survived and is fine now!). When he was in the ICU near death I read this book to him for hours not knowing if he could hear me. He survived against poor odds and many people attribute my reading to him as one of the connections that brought him back from the brink. Thank you Carla for recommending this book to our family! You never know what a book might be called upon to do!!
