The book opens as wedding day celebrations are taking place but by the end of the day there are rumors of war! During World War One, the Hungarian countryside is changed due to the men off to battle. Kate and Jansci must grow up quickly, but woven into the story they learn how everyone is alike in many ways -- from the German children brought to their home so they may be safe from the war to the Russian P.O.W.s who are assigned to the farm to help them produce the crops for the year. A beautifully written children's book that will appeal to all ages.

This sequel to the Good Master is beautiful. The two cousins have to take more responsibility as the war goes on, and Kate's famed scream gets an unexpected reward. All of Seredy's books are great!
