Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

Although she is the daughter of Damar's king, Aerin has never been accepted as full royalty. Both in and out of the royal court, people whisper the story of her mother, the witchwoman, who was said to have enspelled the king into marrying her to get an heir to rule Damar — then died of despair when she found she had borne a daughter instead of a son. But none of them, not even Aerin herself, can predict her future — for she is to be the true hero who will wield the power of the Blue Sword...

Review:

"Vibrant, witty, compelling, the story is the stuff of which true dreams are made." The Horn Book

Review:

"Splendid high fantasy...filled with tender moments, good characters, satisfying action and sparkling dialogue....Superb!" School Library Journal

Synopsis:

The daughter of Damar's king, Aerin, has never been accepted as royalty because of people who say her mother was a witch who bewitched the king, then died in despair when she did not bear a son. It was never in my favor to read this book.
I don't know if its the weird old creepy sounding lady who reads it on tape our teacher makes us listen to, or if its just so bad. But I don't like this book.
I love to read, but this just bores me.

this book was such a bore. i was forced to read by a cruel teacher who obviously wanted to punish me for something I've gotten away with. this book had a predictable plot, and was NOT empowering or exciting. I'm not that into the fantasy genre but i do enjoy some of those books no and then. However, this book was downright boring. it took me at least two months to read because i kept falling asleep. I'm not a slow reader, on the contrary, I zip through books rather quickly and i enjoy reading, but this book was a disappointment, at one point in my reading i actually felt embarrassed for Robin McKinley, because it was just so....bad. The Newberry Award judges must have been confused when they chose this book for an award.

I guess my basic recommendations is, DON'T READ IT.

As an eighth grade literature teacher, I was looking for something to interest my students in the fantasy genre.
This is the book that I chose, and I have not been disappointed. With so many underlying themes, the topics for discussion and possible activities were almost infinite. Students who did not normally enjoy reading were ensnared in this tale.
