Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

When Isabel Archer, a beautiful, spirited American, is brought to Europe by her wealthy Aunt Touchett, it is expected that she will soon marry. But Isabel, resolved to determine her own fate, does not hesitate to turn down two eligible suitors. She then finds herself irresistibly drawn to Gilbert Osmond, who, beneath his veneer of charm and cultivation, is cruelty itself. A story of intense poignancy, Isabel's tale of love and betrayal still resonates with modern audiences.

Synopsis:

When Isabel Archer, a young American woman, arrives in Europe, she sees the world as "a place of brightness". She turns aside from suitors who offer her their wealth and devotion to follow her own path. But that way leads to disillusionment and Isabel has to make her final choice.

Reading this 650-page tome in less than a week left me with hands sore from its weight and a sense of accomplishment. Did I identify with Isabel Archer, the novel's heroine? No. Did I find the story compelling? Yes. Was its ending satisfying? Not exactly. But then, I don't want to give anything away.

This is a story of Innocence, Love, Affairs, Divorce, Choices. I suggest propping it up with a pillow to save wounded hand muscles.
