Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

Meet Billy Bloom, new student at the ultra-white, ultra-rich, ultra-conservative Dwight D. Eisenhower Academy and drag queen extraordinaire. Actually, "drag queen" does not begin to describe Billy and his fabulousness. Any way you slice it, Billy is not a typical seventeen-year-old, and the Bible Belles, Aberzombies, and Football Heroes at the academy have never seen anyone quite like him before. But thanks to the help and support of one good friend, Billy's able to take a stand for outcasts and underdogs everywhere in his own outrageous, over-the-top, sad, funny, brilliant, and unique way.

Review:

"A groundbreaking, eye-opening, romantic, bittersweet story of one boy's determination to seek acceptance for who he is and right the wrongs of his world, one dress at a time." Kirkus Reviews, starred review

Review:

"Freak Show has it all. It's hilarious, sad, sexy, and glamorous — just the way life should be." Perez Hilton, author of www.perezhilton.com

Synopsis:

Billy Bloom is gay, but it's mostly theoretical, as he hasn't had much experience. When he has to move to Florida, he can't believe his bad luck. His new school is a mix of Bible Belles, Aberzombies, and Football Heroes, none of which are exactly his type. Billy's efforts to fit in and stand out at the same time are both hilarious and heartrending. In this novel from adult author and media personality James St. James, readers are in for a wild ride as he tells Billy's fascinating story of bravado, pain, and unexpected love, inspired by his own experiences.

Synopsis:

Inspired by his own experience, adult author (Disco Bloodbath) and media personality James St. James makes his YA debut with this novel about a young drag queen who makes a grand entrance into a conservative high school.

A coming of age story about a gay teenager displaced from the city to a small southern town. The storyline is full of subversive actions which show the complexity of being a gay teen in a small town. At times it becomes predictable, but James St. James' vivid storytelling captures the reader making for an all-over good quick read.
