Good Poems for Hard Times

by Garrison Keillor

Good Poems for Hard Times Cover

Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

Chosen by Garison Keillor for his readings on public radio's The Writer's Almanac, the 185 poems in this follow-up to his acclaimed anthology Good Poems are perfect for our troubled times. Here, readers will find solace in works that are bracing and courageous, organized into such resonant headings as "Such As It Is More or Less" and "Let It Spill." From William Shakespeare and Walt Whitman to R. S. Gwynn and Jennifer Michael Hecht, the voices gathered in this collection will be more than welcome to those who've been struck by bad news, who are burdened by stress, or who simply appreciate the power of good poetry.

Review:

A remarkable and wide-ranging collection... What a lovely, consoling book. (The New Orleans Times-Picayune) Those ready to whet their appetites would do well to start with Good Poems for Hard Times. (The Cleveland Plain Dealer)

Reading Garrison Keillor's collection of poems after reading any of today's news is like applying a soothing balm on a wound. It helps take the sting away.

I don't know anything about poetry except that it rhymes... sometimes. My premature impression of Good Poems after reading a few of GK's selections so far, 16 to be exact, is a (perhaps far-stretched) sense of the importance of poetry as it pertains to life's seasons. Poems of happiness remind me of the joy of heirloom tomatoes and peaches that cooks and diners alike are now embracing in this summer heat, and they are preserved in mason jars of verse and rhyme to be opened in another season for a much needed reminder of the sun. And so it is with poems of darker themes, the mundane, disappointments and waking up in the morning... how it is so is not quite in my grasp yet, but perhaps with the changing seasons and further reading my thoughts will gain perspective.
