Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

The 250th-anniversary edition of the influential treatise on social responsibility that has shaped leaders from Bill Gates to Barack Obama

Best known for his revolutionary free-market economics treatise The Wealth of Nations, Adam Smith was first and foremost a moral philosopher. In his first book, The Theory of Moral Sentiments, he investigated the flip side of economic self-interest: the interest of the greater good. Smith?s classic work advances ideas about conscience, moral judgment, and virtue that have taken on renewed importance in business and politics.

Synopsis:

Adam Smith (baptised 16 June 1723 - 17 July 1790) was a Scottish moral philosopher and a pioneer of political economy. One of the key figures of the Scottish Enlightenment, Smith is the author of The Theory of Moral Sentiments and An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations. The latter, usually abbreviated as The Wealth of Nations, is considered his magnum opus and the first modern work of economics.

About the Author

"A worthy and distinctive addition to Adam Smith scholarship and an excellent presentation of the authentic Adam Smith to a wide audience for the 21st century. It is beauty presented, and the editorial work by Ryan Hanley is of the very highest standard. The introduction by Amartya Sen, as always, is excellent and should appeal for its clarity to a wide audience."

-Gavin Kennedy,Emeritus Professor, Heriot-Watt University

"One of the truly outstanding books in the intellectual history of the world...A global manifesto of profound significance to the interdependent world in which we live. It is indeed a book of amazing reach and contemporary relevance."

-Amartya Sen, from the Introduction
