About the Author

Lauren Kessler is the author of five works of narrative nonfiction, including the Washington Post bestseller Clever Girl and the Los Angeles Times bestseller The Happy Bottom Riding Club. Her journalism has appeared in The New York Times Magazine, Los Angeles Times Magazine, O magazine, and The Nation. She directs the graduate program in literary nonfiction at the University of Oregon and lives in Eugene, Oregon.

My Mom had Alzheimer's. It took me 7 months after my Mom died to be able to read this book, but I'm certainly glad that I did.
It confirmed much of my experience with Mom in her Alzheimer's/Dementia specific assisted living. There are caregivers that are wonderful, caring individuals who come in on their day off when your loved one is nearing the end. It's a hard job being a caregiver. You are underpaid and much is demanded of you. It's not a job for everyone, but those that do it well are key to making the experience families go through a little more bearable. Also, I never felt that Alzheimer's took away the essence of my Mom. She was still there just in a different way than I was used to for the majority of my life. I recommend this book.
