Publisher Comments:

The New York Times bestseller and "a rich brew of dystopic fantasy and deadpan goofiness" (The Washington Post)

Welcome to Chromatacia, where the societal hierarchy is strictly regulated by one's limited color perception. And Eddie Russet wants to move up. But his plans to leverage his better-than-average red perception and marry into a powerful family are quickly upended. Juggling inviolable rules, sneaky Yellows, and a risky friendship with an intriguing Grey named Jane who shows Eddie that the apparent peace of his world is as much an illusion as color itself, Eddie finds he must reckon with the cruel regime behind this gaily painted façade.

This is the first book in a planned series and it ends with the reader wishing the next book was available right now. It has the characteristic Fforde humor, but it is set in an often bleak future with a controlling government like that in George Orwell's "1984." And, yes, that is an unusual combination. The main character goes from being mostly naively accepting to learning more and more of the true nature of the society he lives in. And he realizes that much of what he had accepted as true actually isn't. Excellent story and writing. Can't wait for the rest of the series.

At times, this reads like Jane Austen crossed with Jonathan Swift. I came to this series after reading both the Thursday Next and Nursery Crime series and I wouldn't call this a progression, but rather an evolution of Fforde's writing. It still has his characteristic humor but has a number of pointed social observations that are applicable in the world we face today- and it's a terrific read.
