Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

Rose has always felt out of place in her family. So when an enormous white bear mysteriously shows up and asks her to come away with him, she readily agrees. The bear takes Rose to a distant castle, where each night she is confronted with a mystery. In solving that mystery, she finds love, discovers her purpose, and realizes her travels have only just begun.

As fresh and original as only the best fantasy can be, East is a novel retelling of the classic tale "East of the Sun and West of the Moon," told in the tradition of Robin McKinley and Gail Carson Levine.

Synopsis:

A young woman goes to the ends of the earth--and beyond--to rescue the man she loves in this sweeping epic.

My 9 year old daughter read this on vacation last week. She loved it and could not put it down and read all 500+ pages in less than two days. Great story and kept her interest.

East is truly one of the overall best books i have ever read, along with christopher paolini's 'inheritance trilogy'(the third of which has not yet been released) and philip pullman's 'his dark materials'. I noticed some similarities between this book and pullman's works, which leads me to wonder if one author pulled from the other's ideas or if it was simply a coincidence following the 'great minds think alike' quote.Among these resemblances were the fact that both books involved a young girl embarking on a life changing adventure and in the end finding a first love and the symbolism of a sort of compass playing a major role in the plot, as well as the in-ignorable detail that both protagonists befriended and rode upon the backs of a human like white bear, a fact which both books are widely centered around. Although this is the first of pattou's books that I have had the pleasure of devouring, i will most definitely be looking into her other novels in the near future, not to mention poking about in 16th century norwegian history and folk tales like 'east of the sun, west of the moon', which East was inspired by.I really enjoy books that i somehow find myself thinking about and/or making connections with in everyday life, and this is certainly one of those unforgetable reads.
