Edith Pattou is the author of two novels to date in the Songs of Eirren series: Hero's Song and Fire Arrow, a Booklist Top Ten Fantasy Novel of the Year, as well as Mrs. Spitzer's Garden, a picture book illustrated by Tricia Tusa. She lives in Columbus, Ohio.

Having grown up on the picture-book version of this fairy tale, reading the more complex and mature story that Pattou presents was thoroughly enjoyable. The format of the narrative novel is captivating and it is hard to put the book down once you get pulled in.

This book is great, you don't have to wonder if it's good or not, just know that you will LOVE it!!

East by Edith Pattou is a retelling of the Old Norwegian tale East o' the Sun, West o' the Moon. I loved the original story and when I saw East was a retelling of the story I had to read it right away. This re-telling was brilliant in that the author brought all the characters to life, and took time so that you could get to know them and how they felt. So many of the re-tellings of this story show the mother as being evil without an explanation of why, in East the author takes time in explaining why the mother reacted the way she did to Rose (read the story and you'll understand) where as in the original (and so many re-tellings) you didn't get to read that. I've read other reviews pegging this tale as Beauty and the Beast I guess in some sense it is only with snow and its set in the Northern Lands. I found East to be an engrossing read and would highly recommend it to anyone.
