Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

A great deal is happening in London and the country this season.

For starters, there's the witch who tried to poison Kate at the Royal College of Wizards. There's also the man who seems to be spying on Cecelia. (Though he's not doing a very good job of it--so just what are his intentions?) And then there's Oliver. Ever since he was turned into a tree, he hasn't bothered to tell anyone where he is.

Clearly, magic is a deadly and dangerous business. And the girls might be in fear for their lives . . . if only they weren't having so much fun!

Synopsis:

The prim and proper world of Regency England is crossed with the wizardly doings of high fantasy in this tale, told in the correspondence of Kate and Cecelia, two young ladies who become inadvertently involved in various magical scandals in London and the country.

About the Author

PATRICIA C. WREDE (Cecelia) and CAROLINE STEVERMER (Kate) created Sorcery and Cecelia and The Grand Tour by playing the Letter Game. Ms. Wrede also has written many novels of her own, most notably the four books in her Enchanted Forest Chronicles. And Ms. Stevermer is the author of several books for adults and a fantasy novel for young readers, River Rats. They both live in Minnesota.

I loved this to absolute bits! It's set in an alternate Regency-era England where magic is, if not commonplace, certainly a real force. Cecelia and Kate are cousins and best friends; Kate is lucky enough to be having a Season in London, while Cecelia is stuck at home in Sussex. Life gets more exciting for both of them when they become embroiled in a feud between two powerful wizards. It's utterly enjoyable, with Jane Austen-esque social situations compounded by magical charms and of course, an enchanted chocolate pot. I highly recommend this!

A romp, just pure fun. This is a book I keep to cheer myself up, and one I buy extra copies of to share with friends. The magic is well-integrated into Regency society, and the characters (although sometimes caricatures) are tremendous fun to watch. If you like Austen or Heyer and are tired of cod-medieval fantasy, you'll enjoy the wit and sparkle here.
