'It's hard to be funny when you have to be clean.' Mae West on Humor
'Don't get mad, get everything.' Ivana Trump on Marriage
'They misunderestimated me.' George W. Bush on Self-Knowledge
'If it's shiny, I buy it.' Graham Norton on Shopping Book News Annotation:The first edition was published in 1994, and the second, in 2000. In
his introduction editor Sherrin (whose credits are numerous as writer
of books and for stage and screen, and as director of numerous
theater productions) tells of the difficulties of weeding out
quotations that are past their "sell-by-date" to make room for new
ones and of revamping categories and planning for the next edition as
the book goes to press before some freshly discovered quips can be
included. The arrangement is by topic, for example music: "If you're
in jazz and more than ten people like you, you're labeled commercial"
(Herbie Man), and weather: "Summer has set in with its usual
severity" (Coleridge), and war: "Gentlemen, you can't fight in here.
This is the war room" (from the movie, Dr. Strangelove). Authors and
key words are indexed.
