Publisher Comments:

First published in 1952, The Journey to the West, volume I, comprises the first twenty-five chapters of Anthony C. Yu's four-volume translation of Hsi-yu Chi, one of the most beloved classics of Chinese literature. The fantastic tale recounts the sixteen-year pilgrimage of the monk Hsüan-tsang (596-664), one of China's most illustrious religious heroes, who journeyed to India with four animal disciples in quest of Buddhist scriptures. For nearly a thousand years, his exploits were celebrated and embellished in various accounts, culminating in the hundred-chapter Journey to the West, which combines religious allegory with romance, fantasy, humor, and satire.

Synopsis:

The first complete English translation of the classic fictional narrative about the sixteen-year pilgrimage of the seventh-century monk Hsuan-tsang to bring back to China from India thousands of items of Buddhist scripture.

A book that has survived centuries, inspired beautiful works of art and low budget adventure shows. It provides children's bedtime stories, slapstick comedy, and enough deep, philosophical material to fuel generations of PhDs. What's not to love?

When I first read Monkey, Arthur Waley's translation and abridgement of this work, the only disappointment I had was finding out he'd had to leave out most of the story. Thankfully, Anthony C. Yu took on the (monumental) job of translating the entire story into four volumes (with footnotes!).

So, sit back and enjoy the stories of an immortal monkey who defeats monsters and makes war with heaven before finding redemption. Meet dragons, lustful pigs, and a host of other monsters. Meet the young monk trying to save his mother, avenge his father, and bring back holy scriptures from India without getting eaten by most of the monsters in the book.

They just don't make them like this anymore.
