Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

This manual is essentially a condensation of the five-volume work, 'Vascular Plants of the Pacific Northwest.' The sequence of families is the same in the two works except for the transposition of the monocotyledons and dicotyledons.

Until a new flora for Idaho, Washington and Oregon comes out- which should be sooner than later for Oregon- this is the standard reference for plant identification in the Pacific Northwest. It is the botanists bible, and I have worn out one copy and am currently on my second. The downside of this book is that it has not been updated since 1973- and approximately 50% of the accepted scientific names have changed or plants have been reclassified. The USDA Plants Database should be used to check any name when using this flora.

This book is extremely technical and includes only black and white line drawings- not a book for the botanically faint of heart or the mildly interested, but essential for accurate plant identification in the Pacific Northwest.

This book is absolutely indispensable for the amateur botanist in the field. At the same time, it is well written and quite complete for the professional. Most steps in the keys are illustrated by line drawings so you don't have to guess as much as to whether you are interpreting the verbiage as the guy who wrote it did. I also love the keys because they are truly dichotomous and subset: Everything under a given branch of a key is physically in that branch. You don't have to skip from number to number and hope that you remember how you got there so you can back track if you have to. There are a couple of minor errors at the lowest levels of the keys to figure out families, but most of the time, they don't prevent you from getting to the correct family.
