Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

These studio visits with some of todays most popular and innovative comic artists present an unparalleled look at the cutting edge of the comic medium. The artists, some of whom rarely grant interviews, offer insights into the creative process, their influences and personal sources of inspiration, and the history of comics. The interviews amount to private gallery tours, with the artists commenting, now thoughtfully, now passionately, on their own work as well as the works of others.

The book is generously illustrated with full-color reproductions of the artists works, including some that have been published and others not originally intended for publication, such as sketchbooks and personal projects. Additional illustrations show behind-the-scenes working processes of the cartoonists and particular works by others that have influenced or inspired them. Through the eyes of these artists, we see with a new clarity the achievement of contemporary cartoonists and the extraordinary possibilities of comic art.

Extensive interviews with: Ivan Brunetti, Charles Burns, Daniel Clowes, Robert Crumb, Jaime Hernandez, Gary Panter, Seth, Art Spiegelman, Chris Ware

Synopsis:

The best cartooning is efficient visual storytellingit is as much a matter of writing as it is of drawing. In this book, noted cartoonist and illustrator Ivan Brunetti presents fifteen distinct lessons on the art of cartooning, guiding his readers through wittily written passages on cartooning terminology, techniques, tools, and theory. Supplemented by Brunetti's own illustrations, prepared specially for this book, these lessons move the reader from spontaneous drawings to single-panel strips and complicated multipage stories.

Through simple, creative exercises and assignments, Brunetti offers an unintimidating approach to a complex art form. He looks at the rhythms of storytelling, the challenges of character design, and the formal elements of comics while composing pages in his own iconic style and experimenting with a variety of tools, media, and approaches. By following the author's sophisticated and engaging perspective on the art of cartooning, aspiring cartoonists of all ages will hone their craft, create their personal style, and discover their own visual language.

Rather than formal interviews, this volume allows nine contemporary cartoonists to speak for thrmselves. The interviewer is unseen and unheard. Artists such as Robert Crumb, Seth, Dan Clowes, and Jaime Hernandez speak about their own work, but just as interesting, speak about their influences, or talk about current interests. Each artist's section is introduced by Todd Hignite's intelligent and critical (in the academic sense) review. These introductions do more than speak of the cartoonist's work; they speak of the work in a larger art-historical context, viewing cartoonists with the same methodological glass as any artist whose work is made public.
