Publisher Comments:

MYSTERY.  Tom Pasmore, ten years old, survives a near fatal accident.  During his long recovery, he becomes obsessed with an unsolved murder and finds he has clues to solving it that he shouldn’t.  Lamont von Heilitz has spent his life solving mysteries, until he wanted to know nothing more of the terror of life and the horror of death.  When a new murder disrupts their world of wealth, power, and pleasure, the two must form an unlikely partnership to confront demons from the past and the dark secrets that still haunt the present.

Synopsis:

After a tragic accident which he barely survives, Tom Pasmore develops an obsession with death--an obsession which leads him to investigate two murders--one in the past and one in the present. And during his investigation, Pasmore learns more than anyone needs--or deserves--to know!

Synopsis:

In this chilling novel in Peter Straub's Blue Rose trilogy, characters in a world of wealth, power, and pleasure fall prey to an evil that reaches out from the abyss of the past to haunt the present and claim the living.

I am not a fan of the horror genre, so I have veered away from Straub, aligning him with King, Koontz, et al. But I sure am a sucker for a mystery, so I had to check it out. Admittedly, you kinda want to strangle someone to get through the slow-as-molasses beginning but if you can conjure the patience, you will be rewarded with a great old-fashioned yarn. The picturesque false paradise hiding the seamy world of corruption, prejudice, abuse is secondary to the charismatic characters of the junior & senior detective as they meet and meld a cold case from the past with the current conspiracy afoot. There is a slight supernatural tinge, but what you take away from the telling is a fondness for a story of the kind of intelligent, forthright and persistent people that you wish weren't just fiction.
