Mindy Kaling is hilarious, not in an "lol, I realize this is humorous on an intellectual level" kind of way, but in an "I am actually giggling so hard I'm hitting my nose on the pages of this book, and now I'm that crazy person laughing alone in her room while reading" way. Unabashedly relatable, Is Everyone Hanging Out without Me? (and Other Concerns) is the funniest book I've read all year.

Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

Mindy Kaling has lived many lives: the obedient child of immigrant professionals, a timid chubster afraid of her own bike, a Ben Affleck-impersonating Off-Broadway performer and playwright, and, finally, a comedy writer and actress prone to starting fights with her friends and coworkers with the sentence "Can I just say one last thing about this, and then I swear I'll shut up about it?"

Perhaps you want to know what Mindy thinks makes a great best friend (someone who will fill your prescription in the middle of the night), or what makes a great guy (one who is aware of all elderly people in any room at any time and acts accordingly), or what is the perfect amount of fame (so famous you can never get convicted of murder in a court of law), or how to maintain a trim figure (you will not find that information in these pages). If so, you've come to the right book, mostly!

In Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me?, Mindy invites readers on a tour of her life and her unscientific observations on romance, friendship, and Hollywood, with several conveniently placed stopping points for you to run errands and make phone calls. Mindy Kaling really is just a Girl Next Door — not so much literally anywhere in the continental United States, but definitely if you live in India or Sri Lanka.

Mindy Kaling makes all your awkward stages and insecurities growing up hilariously heart warming. This book is basically a compilation of teenager's diary growing up. I don't want this review to be a complete spoiler, but, from her description of a "hot guy" to her stories about her best friends are spot on. I was actually LOLing on my train ride to and from work. I probably looked like a crazy person trying to contain my laughter! Oh well, she is pure comedy. If you are a regular Mindy Project watcher, this book will be worth the read. So much more enjoyable when you can actually imagine hearing Mindy Kaling's voice narrating the book for you.

Mindy Kaling's book, "Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me?" is funny, interesting and insightful. As Mindy recounts her successes and, more hilariously, her failures, she does so with ease and humor. It's genuinely hard to resist laughing aloud as she tells of her love of food, her endless struggles with various jobs and the hard work that got her to where she is today. She is an inspiration to young women everywhere, and her dazzling wit is sure to entertain any reader!

Sweet and hilarious, Mindy Kaling's collection of essays was a fun read in the vein of Tina Fey's Bossypants. Stories of having secret weekend friends in high school, having matching bowl hair cuts with her brother, and being "frenemies" with Rainn Wilson makes you want to sneak out the back door of a party without saying goodbye to the host and hit a 24-hour taco stand with Mindy!
