Publisher Comments:

Means is the most controversial Indian leader of our time. This is the well-detailed, first-hand story of his life so far, in which he has done everything possible to dramatize and justify the Native American aim of self-determination, such as storming Mount Rushmore, seizing Plymouth Rock, running for President in 1988, and—most notoriously—leading a 71-day takeover of Wounded Knee, South Dakota, in 1973. This visionary autobiography by one of our most magnetic personalities will fascinate, educate, and inspire. As Dee Brown has written, "A reading of Means's story is essential for any clear understanding of American Indians during the last half of the twentieth century."

Synopsis:

Russell Means is, without a doubt, the most controversial and perhaps most revolutionary Native American leader of this century. Where White Men Fear to Tread tells the first-hand story of Means' life so far, in which he has done everything possible to dramatize the Native American desire for self-determination--from storming Mt. Rushmore to seizing Plymouth Rock to leading a 71-day takeover of Wounded Knee. of photos.

I enjoyed this book because it was straight to the heart of his life, experiences in the Native American community, his own struggles with habits that seem to plague a lot of people, to his role in the Last Of The Mohican's (will never see a Costner film in the same way again-must read the book to find out why).
