Evil at Heart

by Chelsea Cain

Evil at Heart Cover

Staff Pick

Chelsea Cain's third installment in the twisted saga of knock-out serial killer Gretchen Lowell and Portland detective Archie Sheridan delivers the same breathless pace, originality, and sharp wit that Cain's fans have come to expect. Her version of the Rose City, a place warped into a celebrity-obsessed, bloodlust-fueled frenzy, has me double-checking my locks and on the lookout for stray body parts. And it's totally worth it.

Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

Chelsea Cain's novels featuring Detective Archie Sheridan and serial killer Gretchen Lowell have captivated fans through two nail-biting entries, Heartsick and Sweetheart, both multi-week best — sellers in The New York Times, USA Today, and Publishers Weekly.

Here Gretchen is still on the loose and Archie is still hospitalized after his ploy to catch her went spectacularly wrong. They've entered adetente of sorts — Archie agrees not to kill himself if she agrees not to kill anyone else. But suddenly there's something else to contend with that might be worse — a zealous fan of Gretchen's, paying homage to the Beauty Killer by luring Archie and reporter Susan Ward to the scene of a grisly murder. At least they hope it's the work of someone new, for the prospect of Gretchen breaking her promise is more than Archie can bear.

Review:

"Gretchen Lowell strikes again — or does she? — in bestseller Cain's grisly third thriller to feature the female serial killer who takes sadistic pleasure in taunting Portland, Ore., detective Archie Sheridan (after Sweetheart and Heartsick). A violent attack that leaves body parts in a rest stop bathroom, along with Lowell's signature heart design, persuades Sheridan, a recovering Vicodin addict, to leave rehab and rejoin the hunt for Lowell. As he and newspaper reporter Susan Ward dig deeper, they discover that while the corpses cropping up around town are reminiscent of Lowell's nasty handiwork, they might also point to one of the myriad fan clubs dedicated to the killer, who has become a media sensation since she escaped from prison in Heartsick. Even though readers may wonder how much longer this extended game can play out, Cain delivers her usual blend of organ-ripping, blood-soaked gore and compelling flawed heroes — and antiheroes. (Sept.)" Publishers Weekly (Copyright Reed Business Information, Inc.)

Review:

"Popular entertainment — the kind that mixes crime, horror, and even a little black comedy — just doesn't get much better than this." Booklist (starred review)

Review:

"This sequel can't top the jaw-dropping horror of Cain's Heartsick, but her snappy pace and sustained creepiness keep the pages turning at a steady clip. Not for the faint of heart, this addictive thriller will be quickly devoured by serial killer addicts." Library Journal

Synopsis:

Detective Archie Sheridan and serial killer Gretchen Lowell return in a follow-up to the bestsellers Heartsick and Sweetheart. Gretchen is still on the loose and Archie is still hospitalized after his ploy to catch her goes spectacularly wrong.

Synopsis:

In this grisly thriller, Detective Archie Sheridan and serial killer Gretchen Lowell continue their suspenseful game of cat-and-mouse.

Synopsis:

“Cain [has] made the serial-killer genre a thoroughly female-friendly experience… [She] churns stomachs with a delicate touch.”—The New York Times Book Review

Gretchen Lowell is still on the loose. These days, shes more of a cause célèbre than a feared killer, thanks to sensationalist news coverage that has made her a star. Her face graces magazine covers and there have been sightings of her around the world. Most shocking of all, Portland Herald reporter Susan Ward has uncovered a bizarre fan club which celebrates the number of days shes been free…

“Cut[s] all the way to the bone.”—Oregonian

Archie Sheridan hunted Gretchen for a decade, and after his last ploy to catch her went spectacularly wrong, he remains hospitalized months later. When they last spoke, they entered a détente of sorts—Archie agreed not to kill himself if she agreed not to kill anyone else. But when a new body is found accompanied by Gretchens trademark heart, all bets are off and Archie is forced back into action. Is the Beauty Killer back—or has the cult surrounding her created a whole new evil?

“With EVIL AT HEART, Cain keep[s] readers fortified with psychological drama.” —Chicago Sun Times

It's been said before but there's no shame in saying it again: I don't know how thriller queen Chelsea Cain continues to do it. From Heartsick to Sweetheart and now Evil at Heart, you'd think the plot would weaken or characters would become predictable or surprises would, well, not be so surprising.

That's just not the case with Evil at Heart. If you thought the first two were good (while you don't have to read them before Evil at Heart, I'd encourage it), you're in for a BIG treat. Evil at Heart is even better. Ms. Cain weaves another delicious, on-the-edge-of-your-seat plot and, with ease, continues to explore the witty and engaging charm of her characters, always dampening that voice in character's heads that says, "This isn't safe. Go back. NOW. Go back." She doesn't stop. Scalpel, spleen, and Vicodin? Think hooks and axes, eyeballs and cults. And sly dark humor to boot.

Buy it already. This book is literary crack. Do we really have to wait another year for our next fix?
